Kringle are pastries with a long history in Denmark, and are still popular items in modern Danish bakeries. Nowadays, kringle is usually made with only one crossing and not two, as in the original kringle and pretzel shape.  In Denmark, kringle denotes the pretzel-like knotted shape rather than the pretzel pastry type. Kringle may be made from puff pastry (like Danish pastry) or yeast dough, filled with remonce or marzipan and raisins, sprinkled with coarse sugar, nut flakes or icing. (Wikipedia)

Kringle are butter-layered Danish pastries that were introduced to America by Danish Immigrant bakers.  In Denmark, they are traditionally pretzel shaped, almond-filled coffee cakes called Wienerbroth (Viennese bread).  The kringles were created by German bakers from Austria who introduced their method of rolling butter between layers of yeast dough.  It can take up to three days to make the dough for a traditional Danish kringle.  It’s in the shape of a pretzel in Denmark which is where the name comes from (Danish sign for a Bakery, hence the name kringle). The word originates from the Old Norse kringla, meaning ring or circle. (Wikipedia)

Using puff pastry dough that is rolled so thin it has been folded and buttered 27 times allowing the dough to get that light flaky, buttery,  airy texture,  we add almond paste that is sweetened to a delicious flavor.  All our Kringle are given a layer of almond paste and if the kringle is fruit flavored,  a layer of fruit is blended in with the almond paste to create a mouth watering flavor explosion. If the kringle is a traditional Danish kringle of almond it is given a second layer of the almond paste. The top is generously layered with a coarse baking sugar and topped with almond slivers.  We use the rectangular shape for ease of cutting and serving and this allows every mouthful to have the same consistent delectable flavor.  We have been told there are no calories in our kringle, but we can’t endorse this.  Please do not refrigerate the kringle, it is considered a non-hazardous prepared food item which means it is like a loaf of bread and can stay on your counter for 7 to 10 days or be frozen and thawed at room temperature,Danish Bakery Symbol/Traditional Wienerbroth (Viennese Bread)

Baker's guilds in Europe have used the kringle or pretzel as a symbol for centuries. It is told (but currently unconfirmed by historic documents), that when Vienna was besieged by the Turkish Ottoman armies in 1529, local bakers working in the night, gave the city defence an early warning of the attacking enemy. For this, they were later rewarded by the Pope, with permission to use a crown as part of their kringle guild symbol. For unknown reasons, the guild in Denmark is now the only baker's guild in the world with official authority to display a royal crown as part of their baker's guild trade symbol. In Denmark, the kringle (with a royal crown) is one of only a few ancient guild signs still in use today and a traditional golden kringle sign is often hung outside of bakery shops. (Wikipedia)
